GIS Data Formats

ARC/INFO® Export format (.e00 extension)

An Export file is an ARC/INFO coverage that has been converted to an ASCII text file in order to make it accessible to ARC/INFO systems on different platforms. They are not intended for compression, but have become popular as exchange files. In order to convert an .e00 file to an ARC/INFO coverage or ArcView GIS shapefile, you must have ARC/INFO or the Import software distributed with ArcView GIS.

ArcExplorer® Project files (.aep extension)

ArcExplorer saves map display properties, such as whether themes are turned on or off, the map extent, view properties, any classification or labels applied to themes, and any scale factors that have been set. An .aep file has not changed or altered the base data in any way.

ArcView® Shapefiles

ArcView format for storing the location, shape and attribute information of geographic features.

Geotiffs

The geotiff file format embeds image registration information directly into the raster file. Geotiff is an industry-neutral raster file format widely used and recognized by all of the major GIS software vendors. ESRI began support for Geotiff at version 7.0 of ARC/INFO and version 3.0 of ArcView. When you load the quad files with these (or higher) software versions, the quads will automatically appear at their correct coordinates.

A DOS utility program, tif2tfw.exe, was developed by the Department of Transportation for use with their 1:24,000 scale raster quads, which are in Geotiff format. The program, which extracts the georegistration tag from a Geotiff file and creates an ESRI tiff world file (tfw), may be downloaded from the Software and Tools page of the New York State GIS Clearinghouse.

JPEG (.jpg extension)

A standardized image compression mechanism designed to compress either full-color or gray-scale images. JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the original name of the committee that wrote the standard.

ZIP format (.zip extension)

Some files will be zipped for compression purposes and/or in order to bundle multiple files together.

File Decompression: Once downloaded, files can be decompressed using software programs like PKUNZIP or WINZIP in the DOS or Windows environment, or GUNZIP in the UNIX environment. PKUNZIP and GUNZIP may be downloaded by visiting the Software and Tools page of the New York State GIS Clearinghouse. UNIX users must change the ".zip" extension to ".e00.gz" before running GUNZIP on the files. UNIX users also have the option of using other UNIX shareware tools (such as ZIP for UNIX) to decompress the ".zip" file.
